Massenet Residence

The design of the residence is rooted in an ongoing dialogue between the site and the family who will inhabit it. Rather than imposing itself, the structure unfolds along the natural relief, touching the ground lightly at its points of support an inhabited line suspended within the landscape. This architectural gesture, at once simple, deliberate, and restrained, preserves the existing topography while opening new perspectives toward the surrounding environment.
What initially read as a monolithic volume has been divided into two complementary bodies, distributed across two levels that engage in a quiet dialogue shaped by light, views, and varying degrees of intimacy. Refined through an iterative process of physical and digital modeling, the form arrives at a human scale, precise, permeable, and measured, resulting in a sober architecture, deeply anchored in its site and responsive to its natural conditions.
The wooden envelope expresses a clear and deliberate tectonic logic, where each assembly makes the act of building legible.
The contrast between the two types of wood and the mineral presence of the ground anchors articulates a dialogue between gravity and suspension, between untamed nature and nature shaped by human intent.
Cladding alternates between metallic surfaces, capturing the shifting light of the context and two-tone wooden slats that frame the landscape as a sequence of subtle, layered planes.The natural patina of the materials, and their intentional aging, reinforce the idea of a living architecture, one that is inscribed in time and attuned to the cyclical rhythms of the site.
The experience of the residence unfolds as a fluid passage through the landscape. From the moment of entry, the living spaces open outward, naturally guiding the gaze toward the forest.
Volumes succeed one another in a sequence of measured spatial rhythms, alternating between moments of shadow and shafts of light. Each room establishes a singular relationship with the exterior—framed views toward the treetops, plunging perspectives over the pool, glimpses into the double-height space or towards a clearing. At the far end of the living area, a generous terrace oriented toward the pool becomes an inhabited belvedere, inviting contemplation of the slow passage of days and seasons.
Natural light is the project’s primary material. It carves the interior volumes, glides across wooden surfaces, and animates the spaces as the hours unfold. By day, expansive glazing dissolves the boundaries of the built form, allowing the forest to extend inward. By night, the house glows like a suspended lantern, a discreet landmark within the woods, a warm enclosure shaped for living.
The Massenet Residence explores the relationship between the built form and its territory. It seeks neither to dominate nor to disappear, but to connect and elevate, through the simplicity of the gesture and the precision of its proportions.
Every detail, every junction, reflects this pursuit of continuity between material and landscape, between technical resolution and emotional resonance.
This project expresses a fundamental conviction: architecture is not an occupation of the ground, but a conversation between a site, its atmosphere, and those who inhabit it.
